How I Started Exclusively Designing my Tabletop Exercises with ChatGPT

Updated: Apr 30

A Mad Scientist with AI

This is a completely true story. Trust me.

The Crunch Time Challenge

Several months ago, I found myself in a tough spot. A new client needed a comprehensive tabletop exercise designed on a tight deadline. The pressure was on not just to deliver on time but to ensure the entire scenario flowed seamlessly and realistically.

The only problem? Coming up with scenarios, injects, and facilitation questions was always a monumental task. Each scenario had to strike the perfect balance between realism and complexity, and creating injects that felt organic and truly tested the team was no small feat. Then there were the facilitation questions, which needed to be incisive enough to provoke deep reflection and learning.

That's when I decided it was time to experiment with something new—integrating AI into the process.

Turning to ChatGPT for Help

I had heard about ChatGPT’s capabilities in other writing and content creation areas, and I was curious to see if it could help me craft a detailed and engaging crisis scenario. I needed something that would not only meet the client's expectations but also bring a level of depth and realism that was crucial for a successful exercise.

Experimentation and Integration

I started feeding ChatGPT with the specifics of the client’s industry, the potential crises they could face, and the objectives they wanted to achieve from the exercise. The tool was surprisingly adept at understanding the nuances of the scenario. Here's what stood out in the process:

  • Dynamic Scenario Development: ChatGPT helped me build scenarios that were tailored specifically to the client's needs, complete with twists and turns that could happen in real life.

  • Logical Flow and Timing: One of my biggest challenges was ensuring the exercise had a realistic timeline and flow. ChatGPT assisted in mapping out how events would unfold, which was instrumental in making the exercise feel grounded and actionable.

  • Interactive Elements: To add depth, ChatGPT generated various communications like simulated news alerts and social media updates that participants would have to react to in real-time.

Here is some of my initial experiementation:

Mastering AI to Elevate Tabletop Exercises

As I became more familiar with using ChatGPT, I began to refine my approach. I learned the nuances of crafting prompts that would yield even more specific and impactful results.

My scenarios went from being just functional to impressively immersive, truly putting participants in the throes of a crisis. This newfound skill did more than just meet deadlines; it started to wow our clients.

The feedback was phenomenal—participants were not only engaged but also significantly challenged by the scenarios. The realism and depth that I was able to achieve with AI's help started to set our exercises apart from the rest, making them not just drills, but key learning experiences that could be directly applied in real-world situations.
